Study shows global fraud increased by 31% during 2016 holiday season

The upcoming holiday season will make or break businesses dependent on shoppers to drive revenue and ensure success in the new year. According to benchmark data of top global merchants compiled by ACI Worldwide,* 2016 holiday fraud attempts increased 31%, while the number of overall transactions increased by 16%.

Do you know how to protect your business from point-of-sale fraud?

If you count on the holidays to make annual projections and to have cash needed for the coming year's investments, count on these tips to keep more of the holiday sales you ring up:

  • Change default passwords before using a new point-of-sale device or system. Incorporate uppercase letters, numbers and symbols, avoiding common or easy-to-guess passwords.
  • Educate employees to spot suspicious transactions, compare signatures on the back of the card used and the sales receipt, and obtain signatures on contracts and sales orders when appropriate.
  • Maintain terminal safety by regularly inspecting all point-of-sale devices or systems for signs of tampering. If you suspect tampering, contact your merchant services provider.
  • Don't allow associates to browse the internet on point-of-sale systems as they could accidentally download malware or a virus.
  • Install point-of-sale and firewall updates to prevent malware attacks.
